Komodo Island: Journey to the Land of the Last Dragons

Komodo Island

There are few places left on Earth that feel truly prehistoric. Komodo Island is one of them. As the largest island in the Komodo National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage site, this is the only place in the world where you can walk alongside the legendary Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis) in its natural habitat.

For most travelers, stepping onto the shores of Loh Liang (the island’s main gateway) is the “bucket list” moment of their entire Indonesian adventure.

Meeting the Ancient Giants

The Komodo Dragon is the world’s largest lizard, growing up to 3 meters in length and weighing over 70kg. But don’t let their slow, sun-drenched movements fool you—these apex predators are surprisingly fast and possess a keen sense of smell.

What to expect during the encounter:

  • Expert Rangers: You will never explore Komodo Island alone. Professional park rangers, armed with traditional forked sticks, will guide you through the trails. They are experts in dragon behavior and will ensure you get the perfect (and safe) photo.
  • The Trek: Depending on your energy level, you can choose between short, medium, or long trekking paths. Most of our tours follow the medium trail, which offers a balance of wildlife spotting and beautiful forest views.
  • More than just Dragons: Keep your eyes peeled for the dragons’ “dinner”—the island is also home to Timor deer, wild boar, and various tropical birds.

A Landscape Frozen in Time

Aside from the wildlife, the island itself is a marvel of rugged beauty. Rusty red hills, dry savannahs, and hidden pockets of jungle create a dramatic backdrop. It feels less like a tourist destination and more like a scene from Jurassic Park.

How We Visit Komodo Island

Komodo Island is a highlight in our two most popular packages:

  1. One Day Speedboat Tour: Because speedboats can cover more distance, this tour specifically includes Komodo Island for dragon tracking, usually in the early afternoon.
  2. 3D2N Phinisi Open Trip: On Day 2 of our 3-day voyages, we visit the island when the dragons are often most active. This allows for a relaxed trekking experience before heading to the nearby Taka Makassar sandbar.

Note: Our 2D1N packages typically visit Rinca Island instead of Komodo Island. Rinca also has dragons but is located closer to Labuan Bajo, making it more efficient for shorter overnight trips.

Essential Rules for the Island:

  • Stay with the Group: Never wander off the path or away from your ranger.
  • Keep it Quiet: Loud noises can startle the wildlife.
  • Minimal Gear: Carry only what you need (water, camera, sunscreen) to keep your hands free.
  • Important for Ladies: If you are on your period, please inform your guide or ranger. Komodo Dragons have an incredible sense of smell for blood, and the rangers will take extra precautions to keep you safe.
