Kanawa Island: The Serene Gateway to Underwater Paradise

The Deep Sea

If there is one place in Komodo National Park that feels like stepping into a postcard, it is Kanawa Island. Located just about 15 kilometers from the bustling harbor of Labuan Bajo, this 32-hectare island is often the final “sweet treat” on our One Day Speedboat Tours and 3D2N Open Trips.

While islands like Padar offer rugged trekking and Komodo Island offers prehistoric wildlife, Kanawa is all about one thing: pure, unadulterated relaxation.

The Iconic Wooden Pier

Your journey to Kanawa usually begins at its famous long wooden pier. Even before you step off the boat, look down—the water is so crystal clear that you can see schools of needlefish, colorful parrotfish, and even small blacktip reef sharks patrolling the shallow sandy flats. It is arguably the most photographed pier in East Nusa Tenggara.

A Snorkeler’s Dream

You don’t need to be a professional diver to enjoy Kanawa. In fact, you don’t even need a boat to find the reef. The coral gardens start just meters from the shoreline.

What you’ll see:

  • Starfish Colony: Kanawa is famous for its large, bright blue starfish scattered across the white sand.
  • Vibrant Corals: From brain corals to delicate sea fans, the biodiversity here is a testament to the protected status of the National Park.
  • Friendly Fish: Because the waters are calm, it is the perfect spot for beginners to practice snorkeling among thousands of colorful tropical fish.

Hiking for the View

For those who still have a bit of energy left after visiting Padar Island, a short 10-minute walk up the central hill of Kanawa provides a stunning 360-degree view. From the top, you can see the surrounding turquoise reefs contrasting against the deep blue of the Flores Sea—a perfect spot for a final group photo.

How to Visit Kanawa Island

Kanawa is a staple destination in our curated itineraries because of its proximity to Labuan Bajo and its calm sea conditions.

  1. One Day Speedboat Tour: We visit Kanawa as the final stop of the day. It’s the perfect place to wash off the salt and relax with a coconut before heading back to the harbor at 05:00 PM.
  2. 3D2N Phinisi Open Trip: On Day 3 of our luxury and deluxe voyages, we stop at Kanawa after visiting the turtles at Siaba Island. It provides a peaceful atmosphere for your final lunch on board the Phinisi.

Travel Tips for Kanawa:

  • Bring Bread (Sometimes): While we don’t encourage feeding wildlife, the fish here are very curious. Just standing in knee-deep water will often attract a school of followers!
  • Sun Protection: The island has limited shade on the beach. Make sure to bring your hat and eco-friendly sunscreen.
  • Camera Ready: Whether it’s a GoPro for the starfish or a drone for the pier, Kanawa is a highlight for any content creator.
