Kalong Island: The Magical Golden Hour of the Flying Foxes

Sunset

While Komodo National Park is world-famous for its prehistoric dragons and turquoise waters, there is one destination that offers a spectacle so unique it feels like a scene from a fantasy movie: Kalong Island.

Unlike other islands in the park where you hike or snorkel, Kalong Island (often called “Bat Island”) is experienced almost entirely from the deck of your boat. It is the ultimate “Golden Hour” destination, and for many of our guests, it is the most spiritual and breathtaking moment of their entire voyage.

What is “Kalong”?

In the local language, Kalong means “Giant Fruit Bat” or “Flying Fox.” These creatures are impressive, with wingspans that can reach up to 1.5 meters. This small, circular island is covered in dense mangrove forests, providing a protected sanctuary for thousands—if not tens of thousands—of these magnificent creatures.

The Sunset Spectacle: A Daily Natural Phenomenon

As the sun begins to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of deep orange, purple, and crimson, the island comes alive. Like clockwork, as the first stars begin to appear, the bats emerge.

  1. The Awakening: First, you will hear a faint chattering coming from the mangroves.
  2. The Flight: Suddenly, the first few bats take flight. Within minutes, the sky is filled with a continuous stream of thousands of flying foxes migrating toward the main island of Flores to forage for fruit.
  3. The Backdrop: This massive migration happens against the backdrop of one of the most beautiful sunsets in Indonesia, with the silhouette of distant volcanic islands on the horizon.

Why It’s a Highlight of Our Phinisi Trips

Kalong Island is a staple stop on our 2D1N and 3D2N Open Trips and Private Charters. Because the “flight” happens exactly at dusk, you must be on an overnight boat to witness it.

  • Day 1 Finale: On most of our itineraries, Kalong Island is the final stop on the first day. After a day of trekking at Kelor Island and snorkeling at Manjarite, we anchor here to watch the show.
  • The Vibe: There is nothing quite like sitting on the beanbags of a Phinisi deck, drink in hand, watching the sky turn black with bats as the cool evening breeze sets in. It is the moment everyone stops talking and simply watches in awe.

Travel Tips for Kalong Island:

  • Keep Your Distance: To protect the habitat, boats stay anchored at a respectful distance. Drones are allowed but should be flown carefully to avoid disturbing the bats’ flight path.
  • No Stepping Ashore: The island consists of thick mangroves and is home to many snakes; therefore, no one actually steps onto the island. The best view is always from the top deck of your boat.
  • Low Light Photography: If you are a photographer, bring a lens with a wide aperture (low f-stop) to capture the bats as the light fades.

Experience the magic of the evening flight. Kalong Island is waiting for you on our next Phinisi departure. This experience is included in all our overnight packages.
